FABULOUS FARMING

One of the four pillars at St. Clare Centre for Girls is work.  Combine that pillar with the basic need for food and the result is creating a shamba.  (A shamba is a self-sustaining farm.)  At St. Clare, the girls take an active part in the shamba by assisting with the planting and harvesting of the food.  Father Benedict, the local parish priest, and Madam Dorcas, the matron at St. Clare, take the place of village mothers by teaching the girls how to pick and harvest carrots.  The carrots will be mixed with spinach or another green to make a delicious warm salad.
